Baubo 48 x 36 oil and charcoal on canvas
On Baubo:   The harvest goddess Demeter wandered the earth looking for her daughter Persephone, who had been abducted by the god of death. Her grief was the first winter, as all life began to die. Eventually she came to Eleusis, where a woman named Baubo attempted to console her, offering her wine.  But Demeter had reached the end and refused to eat or drink. Finally Baubo lifted her skirts and showed the goddess her shaven muliebria. Demeter laughed – drank – and was able to go on, forcing Zeus to rescue her daughter. The world was restored. The incident was memorialized in the Eleusinian Mysteries.  We have the story from Clement of Alexandria, Exhortation to the Greeks, Ch.2
